Exchange Calendar not Displayed on Apple Watch Complication

by

Under certain circumstances Exchange calendar events are not displayed on the Apple Watch complication as upcoming events. In this post I’ll explain the bug causing the issue and I’ll give you a workaround.

This past Sunday evening I noticed that a recurring Monday morning team call didn’t show on my Apple Watch. The event is stored on my company’s Microsoft Exchange server. Instead, the Apple Watch showed a personal event I had scheduled for later that morning.

Complications are special features you can add to some watch faces, so you can instantly check things like stock prices, the weather report, or information from other apps you’ve installed.

I know that the Apple Watch only shows events on its calendar complication from calendars that you have enabled (via check box) and on the iPhone. I double checked the calendar visibility settings on my iPhone and could confirm that I had enabled the Exchange calendar (I’ll refer to it as Exchange #1 throughout this post). I also noticed that my second Exchange account (Exchange #2) was not checked and thus not visible. Both Exchange accounts use Microsoft Office 365.

Calendar Complication Fails

Through trial and error I could confirm the following funky behavior:

  • Both Exchange accounts enabled/visible: Apple Watch correctly shows upcoming events from both calendars
  • Exchange #1 disabled: Apple Watch correctly shows upcoming events only from Exchange #2
  • Exchange #2 disabled: Apple Watch incorrectly shows upcoming events from only Exchange #2 but not Exchange #1

So in other words, disabling Exchange #2, effectively disables Exchange #1 on Apple Watch Complication. The iPhone handles all cases correctly.

Conclusion

Only the Complication seems to behave incorrectly, while the Calendar app on the Apple Watch correctly mirrors the iPhone. I’m guessing the Complication doesn’t account for the fact that one could have two calendar accounts of the same type (in my case Exchange).

I’ll file a bug report with Apple and will keep both of my Exchange calendars enabled until Apple delivers a fix via software update.

Have you seen any funny behavior in watchOS 2.2? If so, let me know by leaving a comment below.
